Dat e-mail in dit digitaal tijdperk niet meer weg te denken is in het doordeweekse leven, is de Britsh Library niet ontgaan. Ze wil gedurende de maand mei één miljoen e-mails opslaan om te bewaren voor de komende generaties. Nog nooit is geprobeerd om op deze schaal e-mails digitaal te archiveren.
De British Library vraagt alle Britten om tijdens de maand mei één memorabele of veelbetekende mail uit zijn mailbox te plukken en op te sturen naar 'Email Britain'. Dit belooft alvast. Mini soaps spelen zich dagelijks af in ieders mailbox. Van het vinden van de job van je leven over huwelijksaanzoeken tot gigantische ruzies. De mails worden onderverdeeld in tien categorieën: blunders, mails die je leven hebben veranderd, klachten, spam, liefde, humor, alledaagse mails, nieuws,'de wereld rondom je' en 'verhalen uit de wereld'.
Via het project krijg je een snapshot van het dagelijkse leven. Taalkundigen, historici en sociologen zullen er nog jaren van smullen. Evoluties in taal en netetiquette, omgangsvormen, het dagelijkse leven,... zijn maar enkele dingetjes die je er uit kan halen.
'Email Britain' doet ons alvast sterk denken aan 'One day in History' waar we eerder over blogden. Groot-Brittannië heeft dan ook een traditie in het optekenen van het dagelijkse leven. De Mass Observation Archive doet dit al sinds 1937.
